In-Class Composition

 A) What have you learned about the process of conducting a sound research study in class? I have learned a lot about conducting research in this class. I don't think any of the research projects I have had to do in the past have ever been true research so this class has been very helpful. I've learned the differences between quantitative and qualitative research and measures of rigor for each as well as for surveys. I also found the three chapters on analyzing research incredibly informative. Reading research studies no longer seems like such a daunting task and I feel confident in my abilities to determine the relevance of studies now.  B) What have these processes taught you about your future roles as a technical and professional communicator? I think the most important thing I have learned is that there is a lot of space for research within the field of technical communication. I'm also extremely grateful for this class as I am about to take my capstone course next seme...

Plans for Revision

As I move into the revising phase, I have a lot of work to do. I did not dedicate as much time and effort as I would have liked to my literature review and I believe I can improve on that work quite a bit. For my lit review, I want to focus more on the sources that I collected and read than I did previously and establish how they connect with one another and relate to my topic better.  For my research proposal, I am focusing on a usability study. As I stated in my previous blog post there is actually a good amount of research regarding how to better program chatbot technology and research which focuses on the potential of chatbots. In spite of this, there is relatively no research that a) explores the current importance and influence of chatbots in everyday life -- mainly mainstream consumerism-- and b) user satisfaction of chatbot users among different sociolinguistic demographics.  With my research proposal-- and eventually my research itself-- I intend to address this...

Research Gap

While completing my literature review I noticed that my topic of choice is relatively unexplored. I could not find much research on the consumer aspect of chatbots. There were a few articles considering the effectiveness of chatbots as a tool for second language learning and a handful of sources that examined the programming behind chatbots and their use of AAVE. As far as understanding how usability is affected by dialect, however, I couldn't find a single source. The closest that I could find was a study that investigated the effect of language register on chatbot usability. Overall, the sources that I reviewed were all beneficial but not directly related to my topic. Therefore, more research needs to be done to determine how chatbots are more or less helpful to someone based on their language dialect. For my study, I hope to conduct a usability study with people of three separate English dialects to gain a better understanding of how chatbots can be improved.

Topic of Choice and Tentative Sources

The topic I have chosen to pursue is a post-modern analysis of AI, specifically chatbots, in technical writing and their efficacy and efficiency among users who speak English as a Native language, English as a Second Language, and African-American Vernacular English. When I initially began searching for possible sources I believed there would be plenty. I can't be the first person to consider this issue. However, sources were relatively nascent. Upon tweaking my searches though I have found a plethora of what, I believe, will be rich sources. I have listed ten of them below: References Blodgett, S.L., et al. (2020). Language (technology) is power: A critical survey of bias in NLP.       Proceedings of the 58th annual meeting of the association for computational linguistics. 5454-5476.       10.18653/v1/2020.acl-main.485 Coniam, D. (2014). The linguistic accuracy of chatbots: usability from an ESL perspective.  Text & Talk    ...

Topic Interests

Hello there! Due to my indecisive nature this assignment will likely be the most difficult assignment for me to complete all semester. I won't lie; I had a very difficult time producing intriguing research topics to pursue during this course. Honestly, producing any research topics was difficult irregardless of how interesting I find them. Nevertheless, below are a the four options I am considering. 1) Theoretical : Analyze the effect of integrating AI with technical writing on customer satisfaction.  Specifically, I am intrigued by the ever-growing presence of chat-bots and I think I would like to focus my study on the usefulness of chat bots as a means of replacing traditional customer service and user manuals. Questions to answer would be:  How many consumers use the available chat bot option? Is customer satisfaction better or worse when using chat bots as opposed to speaking with a representative or scrolling through user manuals? 2) Empirical : Test the hypothesis that t...
